It talked about how food was simple, and how there were lots of chores to do. It was interesting about how it showed the conflict over land even between Americans. We only briefly went over border conflicts in history, and they didn’t say they went as far as what happened in this book.

Call of the Wild, by Jack London, wasn't really informative either, since it was from the point of view of a dog. But it did go over what we hadn’t studied in history. I think it was the Klondike Gold Rush. I had never learned anything about the subject, so most things were new to me, like how the men camped with hardly any covering at all, and the dog trading for example.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, by Ernest J. Gaines, focuses mostly about the post Civil War issues, while in history we’re learning about before and during the Civil War. The book also talks more about the troubles African Americans faced- discrimination, segregation, etc. The history textbook has said that slavery wasn't the key reason for the start of the Civil War, although it was a part of it.

The dilemmas in the book are things we probably couldn't completely imagine, like the 'Secesh' killings and men like Albert Cluveau. They were all based on the racial discrimination, the social imperfections that were more prominent back then. Jane and Ned had a problem finding a job until they met 'Bones'. Since black people had very few rights, including not being able to press charges against a white person, Jane and Joe Pittman, her late husband, had to pay their way out of their jobs, since the plantation owner tried to make them stay. They didn't really have the right to quit completely. The place Jane lived in when she was over 100 years old was ruled by a landlord, and if you did anything at all that seemed rebellious, you were kicked out and had to move. These difficulties showed that even though the African Americans were free, they still didn't have the same status as the whites. They still hardly had control over their lives, and even though they were free to look for jobs, it was very hard to find someone who'd hire them. Men like Albert Cluveau killed anyone who spoke up about these topics.

The whole basis of this book is about how hard Jane's life is because of the scars of slavery. However, in history, it says that slavery wasn’t the only big issue between the North and South. They fought also because of their differences- their economies relied on different products, so their populations, resources, wealth, and needs were different. It's odd how the book makes it seem like that was the only reason for conflict, while the history textbooks say otherwise.

These three books are set in different time periods in totally different areas of the country. They all showed sides to events and phases in history that the textbooks never really went into, and 2 out of the 3 books weren't part of the topics we've studied. This is why I couldn't relate my knowledge to the books much. It was interesting to have an insightful way to learn about the Arctic trade, early America, and African American rights after the Civil War.

Miss Jane Pittman 2

i'm pretty far... past where Tee Bob killed himself. i didn't really understand that part. why was that woman always sitting on the ground when he was on his horse? 0_o and how could he love her so much to run away with her? and kill himself when she refused? and i don't see why they couldn't have made it work... didnt his father interracially marry too? or did i miss something... *sigh* all these characters are confusing, because the book only uses like ONE sentence to introduce them, then brings them into the story a chapter later.... T__T but i dont understand how at the beginning her mistress whipped her so much and wanted to kill her just because she 'sassed' her... anyways, the first example of jane's annoying-ness.

The driver said: "Shut up. You ain't nothing but trouble. I ain't had nothing but trouble out since you come in that field."
"If I ain't nothing but trouble, you ain't nothing but Nothing." Jane may be a good babysitter, but I don't think she's very good at the whole survival thing. you can only go so long without meat. when you're traveling a few miles a day, on foot, you're going to get tired, and vegetables won't sustain you. but it was really sweet how Jane took him with her, and she lets him rest whenever he needs to.

It's odd.... everyone uses the N word so... lightly. it's just another word to them. i wonder what made it so offensive now adays. maybe it's just because they were considered not even people back then, so it didn't really matter what they were called.

Call of the Wild 3

wow... i finished the book... that was a SAD ending... When the boy was walking up to him he just challenges him! pg. 6- "Neither boy spoke. If one moved, the other moved- but only sideways, in a circle; they kept face to face and eye to eye all the time. Finally Tom said: "I can lick you!" "I'd like to see you try it." "Well, I can do it." "No, you can't either." Honestly. It was like a Did-Not, Did-Too, I-dare-you-try, scaredy-cat fight.

When Tom convinces all the boys of the town to give him trinkets in exchange for a chance to whitewash the fence. Lesson: There is nothing amazing about whitewashing a fence, and you shouldn't be easily convinced otherwise. I mean would you believe that mowing the lawn was amazing just because you don't do it everyday? pg. 13- "... Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence everyday?" That put the thing in a new light. -___-

Tom wins the Bible by exchanging pieces of random things for tickets. Lesson: It's a bad idea to be recognized for something you didn't work for and weren't familiar with at all. pg. 32- "... for we are proud of little boys that learn. Now, no doubt you know the names of all the twelve disciples. Won't you tell us the names of the first two that were appointed?" Tom was tugging at a buttonhole and looking sheepish. He blushed now, and his eyes fell. Mr. Walter's heart sank within him. He said to himself, "It is not possible that the boy can answer the simplest question-" why did the judge ask him? Yet he felt obliged to speak: "Answer the gentleman, Thomas- don't be afraid." Tom still hung fire. "Now I know you'll tell me," said the lady. "The names of the first two disciples were-" "DAVID AND GOLIATH!"

Tom, Joe Harper and Huck become pirates. Lesson: You can only go for so long doing idle, childish games that are pointless. 3 kids can't survive in the woods without missing their families, or their old lives at least. Never run away. your families will be worried sick, and might be convinced that you are actually dead, and might actually hold your funeral way too early.

Tom and Huck follow Injun Joe and the Blind Spaniard. Lesson: Don't go follow a convicted murderer and a crazy old guy on a night when they're doing business where money and riches are involved, unless you're ready to run for your life. :P

Tom flirts with Amy Lawrence, Amy flirts with that other boy... Lesson: The way to a person's heart is not to make them jealous. *shakes head*

Tom and Becky go wandering an uncharted cave, alone. Lesson: Note wandering, uncharted and alone. enough said. T__T

Those were most of the major antics that Tom had that had bad consequences. Ones that turned out good were when Huck followed Injun Joe and the Spaniard again and saved the widow... Tom takes the blame for Becky, he gets the whipping. Becky loves him indefinitely. Tom and Huck go into the cave again to get the gold, they become rich. srry this was really long... ^_^

Tom Sawyer 2

I dont really get these boys. they just make up rules that they believe and follow. For example, when Tom and Huck go looking for the treasure in the cave (after Injun Joe died) Huck starts getting all scared because Injun Joe's spirit might be haunting the cave or what not. Then Tom starts making up all these things like he'll only haunt the mouth of the cave or whatever. how can they be so... trusting in their own fantasies?

and when they found the gold, they each got about $12k? or was it altogether? but I bet that nobody thought bad about them after they were rich. the book said they earned about $1 a day (or a week or something) as interest from the bank? and that $1 was about a year's boarding cost... so they'd make filthy rich incomes in a few weeks already. so that's probably the equivalent of making about... $1000 or more a day/week/month nowadays. 0_o

at the end of the book, when huck doesnt want to lead the "rich" life anymore, i was really dissapointed. i guess huck was too used to his old way of life, and hated the confines of society. most of us would have thought that life with the widow would have been a much better alternative, so it was a little unnerving that huck didn't like his life there. even with the stuffiness, he could have found someway to have days off to go fishing or w.e like Tom had. when Tom and Huck decide to become robbers after... i mean, they hadn't learned anything at all! it just proves that boys never grow up ;P jkjk

1st Honor's Essay

1st Honor's Essay

When I read Johnny Tremain, (by Esther Forbes), and Witch of Blackbird Pond, (by Elizabeth Speare), I thought that they really put into perspective what New England was like during the colonial period and during the start of the Revolutionary War. It showed in detail how the people of America could have been, and probably were like- how they thought of the British rule, what their lives were like, and how different people's opinions on the world affected them. In US History, we learned about early America and the Revolutionary War. These two books help you better understand the people during those times.

In Johnny Tremain, the Revolutionary War was started. It showed the conspiracy, if you will, against the British, and the secretive nature and danger about it. Real men like John Hancock and Paul Revere, were mentioned in the text books, about what they did for the country and such. But in the book, their actions come to life. It relayed how not all circumstances were the same. The men didn't always necessarily meet in secret at risk of execution. There were also many oddities and quirks to the men that could have been made up, but some were true to the book, like how some were amazing speakers or wealthy merchants. However, what is more significant is that the book emphasized somewhat on how the British were affecting everyone's lives in New England. Soldiers were posted everywhere. They ransacked the town a few times, by orders of the King. People were scared of them, and only a few dared to stand up to them, who were the patriots who fought in the War, like Rab and Dr. Warren.

In Witch of Blackbird Pond, even when Kit is only on the boat, you could already tell that she wasn't accustomed to American life, having grown up in Barbados. She had a carefree, sheltered, and comforted lifestyle, but when she sailed to America, you could already pretty much know for sure that she was in for a difficult time. The cultures of Barbados and of New England were very different. Swimming was normal in Barbados, but in America if a woman could, she would be considered a witch. In Barbados Kit had owned slaves, but in Massachusetts slaves were forbidden. Although there were many contrasts, the most interesting point, to me, was the aspect of religion. In Kit’s upbringing, she was encouraged to read works by Shakespeare and of Greek mythology. The bible wasn’t that substantial to her life. But in America, Shakespeare was considered scandalous, and the only things that were considered decent to read were books on Christianity. Not all women were even expected to read, never mind actually reading well and with ease. Everyone was expected to attend Mass everyday, sometimes even more then once a day. What I didn't expect was the hatred and discrimination against Hannah, the "Quaker". She was still a Christian, but because she didn't attend mass or was a Protestant, she was fined and shunned by the community. The textbooks in History talked about freedom for all, yet the people did to Hannah what the British had done to them. It makes you wonder about the virtues and morals of the people, but then again, it is fiction.

Both books give a very good description of life in colonial America. In our textbooks it describes the farming and the hard labor and the schooling, and the trading establishments and ports, and these stories take you into that kind of life. The life of a Bostonian was described very well, with all the businesses around the harbor and all the trading and ship activities going on around, and I understood how merchants could become rich from this new world. The life as a humble country farmer was very well told as well. The long, laborious days were described, with the occasional party or get together. I was also amused by the close knit community, (Ex. The cornmeal or flour pudding) and how it could be a good, but also a bad thing.

These two books show how different two cultures could be, but yet how the people of those cultures could get along. In Johnny Tremain, Johnny made friends with many of the soldiers. They were friendly and chatted and such. However, when it came to politics or the British rule, the officers would always be cold and authorative, making sure that the citizens knew who was "in charge." In Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit was out of place at first, but she had become accustomed to the lifestyle and made friends, no matter how odd their traditions seemed.

Generally, the lessons that we learned in history were embellished, or brought to life and our perspective, more so. More detail from the books helped me visualize life in early New England, and what people had gone through to make their home their own country. This makes history more interesting, when you can put yourself in the place and time of the thing you're studying.

Tom Sawyer 1

I've at page 97.

I honestly DO NOT get what is WITH these boys! they're like... hillbillies... I mean Tom likes her as much as he thought he liked that other girl (amy lawrence i think). i think it's just another phase thing. that he'll grow out of it and find another girl like he did when he met Becky.

And WHERE do they get all those bits of junk? a doorknob... 0_o

and about "injun" joe and those other 2 men... what exactly were they doing? grave robbing? i think that's it... but i dont think that there was such a good reason for those 3 men to start fighting and eventually get deadly. and what's with tom and huck about being so scared of a stray dog?? this book just gets weirder and weirder... especially when tom, huck and joe harper run away and become "pirates".... a boy's mind is an EXTREMELY strange thing... i wonder how they're going to survive in the woods. i think they're probably going to go back home after a day or 2. or be found and be forced back.

new layout

i found this skin and immediately loved it! :'( i was about to cry seriously!! but i dont really cry because of books or movies or anything... but i came pretty close. i know this blog isnt for things other then honor's books, but it was SO SAD!!! April Morning shows the british as a lot less friendly compared to in Johnny Tremain... in april morning it actually shows the british as the merciless filthy evil (lol) people that they're described by john hancock, etc. but in johnny tremain they're friendly! at least for the most part. the general (forgot his name) didn't really act that harshly after the boston tea party (at least it didnt say he did). he still let the rebel newspapers print articles and stuff... but this major pitcairn... grrr evil person... he didnt even give the reverend a chance to talk!! the only nice british person was that soldier that tried to help adam's granny with adam's father's body. but then again, he was involved in the killing, probably. but at least he had compassion.
there i made some connection with the honor's books, even though that book was from a while ago :P

and about witch of blackbird pond. i was reading amanda s's entry. and as i commented, i was wondering why people of new england were so... up tight about only reading stuff about God and stuff. i mean they all (in a sense) originated in england, and Queen Elizabeth herself really liked Shakespeare plays, which weren't plays about Christianity or anything really... so why do the people of colonial america think it's "scandalous?" and if, after a while, religion got really big, then why would Kit's grandfather not care about it? maybe he was a rebel, and maybe that's why he lived in barbados. those are 2 pretty good things to contemplate...
and i also thought it was kind of cheap how Kit was supposed to agree to william coming over and just staring at her all night and was expected to accept his proposal. they hardly knew each other, and they had nothing in common and hardly ever said more then 2 sentences to each other at a time! or in 1 evening! but i guess a girl was supposed to agree, to be like proper and polite and honor the family and stuff. but good thing Kit didn't mind about that. i'm glad about the ending ^_^ nat was perfect for Kit.

april morning vs. witch of blackbird pond

i was reading the book for normal english- "April Morning", and i thought that Adam's dad (moses cooper) and Kit's uncle, matthew wood, were very very similar. they both are very politically opinionated, and want to get free from the British. they're both express themselves really strongly about those things, as well as preaching to their families about being "God-fearing people" (not saying it's bad, but in their case they're making a WAY too big deal out of it) and they also live in small towns, and they're both really stiff and rarely, if not at all, show any affection to anybody. but deep down they love their families a lot and are doing what they think is right for their families and for their country.

so...

Brian: i do write about the books, but it seems like practically no one's started witch of blackbird pond posts yet... so i talked about other stuff. my posts about the book are below though

and YES i found a perfect file of the charlie brown song!!! :D:D:D:D
i mean everyone's happy! mercy and john and judith and william get married. and nat proposed (or at least he's going to) to Kit!!!! :D and hannah and prudence are safe, and kit was found innocent (from being a witch).

however, i didn't understand why prudence's mom was so EVIL!! she didn't believe in prudence at all, and she probably beat her and half starved her too >:( i cant believe her husband didnt stand up for himself and prudence till now. uggh. i mean you'd think men used to have more power over women in those days. but i'm glad he finally did, because he was so proud of prudence for learning how to read. i'm also glad that nat didn't get caught for coming back into wethersfield and proving that he cared for Kit (^^,) when the judge didn't order for people to search for nat when he escaped shows that the courts back then weren't so uptight as we'd think. but it makes you think... if there were enough people like "goodwife" cruff in the town then the judge might have been convinced that kit was guilty. this is probably what happened in many other towns.

I used to think that once you were accused of being a witch it was practically an automatic a death sentence, and a trial was just a formal step. but the book shows that it wasn't always like that because Kit was freed.

Overall, i'd give this book a 8.5/10, because it showed the pilgrim times pretty well. however, it didn't really spend much time on the witch trials part. that's what i thought that most of the book was gonna be about. but the book does describe some important aspects of life in early colonial times, like the bitter cold and the hard labor needed to keep a house going, like farming and endless cooking and weaving and stuff. also, the how gossip could get the best of people in small towns, and the dreary meetings and clothes, but it also showed that people also had fun once in a while.
I'm glad that Kit found the beauty of connecticut, but i guess barbados was her real home, and would always be.

witch of blackbird pond 4

--i'm at around page 190

i HATE the townspeople!!! i thought johnny would actually tell cilla his true feelings or at least really kiss her or something. but nooo...!! and i was so mad that rab died! and the book didn't even tell about the part when Dr. warren cuts johnny's fingers to seperate them! i'm surprised that the British didn't catch johnny when he sneaked into their camp (with pumpkin's uniform). i mean maybe they were too exhausted from the fight to pay attention much, but i mean he didn't even fake an accent!

i do wonder how the minute men "licked" the british. they didn't explain or give any details at all. i also wonder why boston wasn't in chaos or slight panic. the town was really quiet and nobody was on the street. maybe it was shock or silent fear. i'm also surprised that no one shouted or spit at the British when they came back from the fight.

i didn't know that the song "Yankee Doodle" was made to make fun of the Yankees. it goes ummm... something like... :

"Here comes General Washington
Upon a strapping stallion
something something something something...
i guess there was a million.

Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle Dandee
Buy a something and a cap (??)
And with the girls be handy."

that's all i remember, but i still dont get how that's making fun of em, except that "dandee" means wimp or sissy or something.

i expected johnny to go off and fight eventually, because he was feeling left out and it's what a "man" has to do. i was dissapointed that the Yankees didn't really seem that heroic after it all. i guess if you were in this situation no one would really seem that happy or valiant because they have to kill, and no matter what the cause they'd still be sad about it. and the British didn't really seem all that cruel, because most of them were just men following orders, and they were people too.

the only bad person (that's shown) in the book is Dove. sort of. i mean, he's just a stupid fat lard (LOL). but really. he's gullible, lazy, worthless, and thinks too highly of himself sometimes when he doesn't do anything (when johnny does his work). whereas, like those soldiers, most probably didn't want to kill for something they didn't believe in (maybe some at least), and they were just following orders from the King. also, i bet that the Yankees seemed just as bad to some of the British because they wanted to kill them [the British] just as bad as the British wanted to kill the Yankees. so it was all pretty fair.

i wish the book went on to johnny fighting, and going through all the skirmishes and everything that goes with that stuff. it would have been interesting and a lot more... finished. i wish it would have gone on till the end of the war, then johnny would go back to cilla and they would have gotten married... lol that would have been a really good ending. it would have probably doubled the book or more, but it would have been complete.

The War Starts

I just got to page 235.

The war still doesn't really seem to affect Johnny that much, except that Rab and all the leaders of the Minute Men are gone. The biggest thing that seems to impact Johnny that has to do with the war is that the British soldiers trashed the newspaper printing place, and that Rab left.

When Johnny sees all those British soldiers, with all their fancy uniforms and their shiny guns and everything, I wondered how the rebels could have stood a chance against them. But then i remembered something. The British stood in lines are just fire at each other, so did the rebels do that too? or did they like hide and stuff like nowadays? Cuz i saw part of this movie, with Heath Ledger hehe ;P and Mel Gibson. I think it was about the Revolutionary War. and i saw a part where the ppl were fighting and they just stood in rows and shot at each other (i knew that's what they did before but i still thought it was really stupid. i mean it's just based on luck that you aren't hit), so maybe the rebels in the book do that. but then they wouldn't have a chance. hmmm....

hmm...

lol it looks like almost nobody's close to where i am in Johnny Tremain... so i wonder how ppl are gonna reply to my posts... except like o wow that's what happens? It didn't really seem like the British affected Johnny and the Laphams. And they didn't really show any examples of any characters that were under the heavy tax or w/e. by the way i'm on page 176 or something. lol i dont think most ppl are that far but Margaret finished it in a DAY! lol

back to the book... umm yea i was wondering how they actually got on to the boats (the boston tea party) . i mean weren't there guards? and wouldn't there be soldiers around who heard the commotion and tried to stop them? and the book doesn't really display john hancock and the other people in a very good light. they seem very... mean and "disgruntled."

and the part where issanah's dressed up as this card and her legs are showing. I guess back then showing your legs up to half your thigh was like how revealing underwear would be now. I still dont really get what the "line" between miss lavinia's eyebrows is. is it like a unibrow? or a scar?

i was also really surprised that mrs. lapham actually married mr. tweedie. and that madge AND dorcas eloped. the book shows that people (usually) married for conveniece or money, or in this case to keep the family business in the family. i mean i'm SURE that they could have found someone else to run the shop then that squeak pig lol.

well that's all guys. post! i want as many replies as possible!
